The Dalles Riverfront Connections Pushes Forward

GreenWorks, working closely with KPFF and Nathan Good Architects, was charged with developing a festival area located on a swath of land in between I-84 and the Union Pacific Railroad on the edge of The Dalles' city limits. Comparable in size to approximately three Portland city blocks, this design incorporates a parking lot accommodating 60-65 vehicles, and a covered picnic pavilion, buttressed by restroom and picnic facilities. This focal point forms a strong presence to Union Street as well as a stage to the "great" lawn in which events could be held. A public art feature is proposed to be located on axis with Court Street. All of these elements combined, help to establish a strong connection with the historic downtown to the Columbia River, enhancing community identity, and encouraging economic development.

The Federal Economic Development Administration recently awarded the City of the Dalles a $2 million grant toward a new marine terminal that will complement this project and boost the city's economic growth.  For more on the grant and the current riverfront improvements in The Dalles visit: http://www.oregonlive.com/business/index.ssf/2010/06/new_marine_terminal_in_the_dal.html

The project is pushing forward with gusto. The team is on track to wrap up construction documents for the commercial dock and festival area by the end of August. The project is scheduled to go out to bid on September 1, with construction starting in November.

Anderson Road Construction Begins

Construction on Anderson Road has begun, which features the first green street to be built in Damascus, Oregon. This one block, 600 linear foot project, will serve as a demonstration project for future sustainable infrastructure projects planned for the future. This project incorporates stormwater planter boxes, stormwater swale, pervious asphalt and permeable pavers into its design.

GreenWorks Collaborates with Area Leaders as Part of the Oregon Sustainability Experience

On July 20, 2010, Jim Figurski, Principal and Technical Director at GreenWorks, led an on-site discussion of the sustainable principles incorporated in the design at Tanner Springs Park in the Pearl District.  The tour and discussion was part of the annual Oregon Sustainability Experience.  Jim’s discussion of the design principles and goals for the park was followed by a discussion of on-going maintenance practices and the evolution of the Park by Mark  Griswold Wilson, a Restoration Ecologist working for Portland Parks and Recreation. Headwaters at Tryon Creek Included in Sustainable Pilot Program

The Sustainable Sites Initiative chose GreenWorks' project The Headwaters at Tryon Creek to participate in a two-year Pilot Program that will certify Headwaters as Pilot Certified.  Headwaters was selected among the diverse range of projects chosen, and will be in the first group to demonstrate the certification requirements in the United States.  Headwaters will undergo rigorous evaluation using the The Sustainable Sites Initiative: Guidelines and Performance Benchmarks 2009 that will look beyond sustainability and evaluate every aspect of the design and site, rating the project on a 4 star scale.  Check out the Sustainable Sites Initiative site for more information: http://www.sustainablesites.org/pilot/

GreenWorks' Principal Jim Figurski weighed in on the Pilot program and the impact it holds on the landscape architecture industry in a Sustainable Business Oregon article published recently: http://www.sustainablebusinessoregon.com/articles/2010/05/three_oregon_sites_chosen_for_sustainable_pilot.html

Pendleton Riverfront Plaza Construction Well Underway

Construction continues on Pendleton's new Riverfront Plaza designed by GreenWorks.  The Plaza is expected to be complete this September to celebrate the 100th annual Pendleton Round-Up.

The goal of this project was to replace residential properties along the Umatilla River Greenway Trail that had been purchased by the City to produce a park connection from Court Avenue to the Greenway Trail.

GreenWorks’ design for this park focused on providing a strong connection from Court Avenue and the neighborhood to the River Parkway trail located on an elevated levee on the northern edge of the park; and developing an urban park facing Court Avenue that provided for passive recreation uses and festival activities.

Park elements included trees, native landscaping adjacent to the Greenway, paved courtyard area, ramps and stair connections to the Greenway trail and decorative  native stone walls that were also utilized at Westgate Intersection Gateway to the Court Avenue improvements together.

This project was done in partnership with the City of Pendleton staff and required coordination with ODOT and USA COE.
